Our Favorite Things

A small list of our favorite businesses in the Passport to Humboldt.

Bites & Nibbles: Chuchi’s French Dip

When you’ve got the hunger and you want something quick, nothing beats a Chuchi’s sando. This hidden gem was created by the owners of former sushi bar Kyoto in response to the pandemic. Old Town rejoiced at the newest lunch option. It’s affordable, good and most of all, the menu is crafted by real foodies. Don’t miss trying their cilantro sauce with your order. It’s good on everything.

Libations: North of Fourth Bar

North of Fourth is a labor of love for owners Chuck and Erica. This bar was more than four years in the making on account of the extensive restoration they undertook for the bar. Enjoy a specialty cocktail here and if you’re lucky, you’ll get to enjoy some live music while you’re here. The garden patio is also a delight and for the truly special, you may be greeted by the bar dog, Doug.

Shops We Love: Just My Type: Letterpress & Paperie

Have you ever wanted to see a restored turn of the century letterpress in action? Well luckily for you, that’s what Just My Type specializes in. Lynne Jones and her team create one of a kind works of art and print them on authentic letterpress printers. They are responsible for all of the Dick Taylor chocolate packages. Each envelope is printed right here in her Old Town shop.

Dispensaries: HPRC (Humboldt Patient Resource Center)

HPRC is the first and oldest dispensary in Humboldt County. While the Arcata location is the original shop, HPRC has an Old Town location as well with just as much quality selection of cannabis goods, many of which are straight from Humboldt County. This dispensary also carries their own flower products, exclusive to HPRC.

Cafés: Familia

In the lobby of the historic Vance Hotel is one of Humboldt’s best coffee shops. Familia is the newest creation from Humboldt Bay Coffee Roasters, one of the oldest coffee roasters in the county. Quality is their passion from the initial roast to the final pour. You may not know it from the outside, but the staff here is as nerdy and knowledgable as it comes to coffee. Whether you enjoy geeking out about natural process or just want a morning coffee, you don’t want to miss Familia.
